What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

The oral and maxillofacial surgeon is an individual who addresses problems ranging from the removal of impacted wisdom teeth to the repair of facial trauma. Maxillofacial refers to the jaws and face. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon would be a doctor you would visit to:

• Have a tooth extraction or removal of impacted teeth

• Have teeth replaced by having dental implants inserted

• Have oral and maxillofacial procedures performed in the office under outpatient ambulatory anesthesia

• Have a jaw cyst or tumor diagnosed, removed and reconstructed

• Have your jaw aligned with orthognathic surgery

• Have your jaw joint repaired with TMJ surgery

• Have jaw reconstruction following cancer surgery

• Have your facial bones realigned after facial trauma

ABOUT YOUR ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON

Dr. Richard Gordon is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He completed his residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Columbia University and Harlem Hospital Center in New York City. He was additionally a clinical instructor in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Columbia University Dental School, and at Rhode Island Hospital and the Samuels Dental Clinic. Dr. Gordon is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has published numerous articles in local and international journals on oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Gordon has practiced in the Atwood Medical Center since 1979.

It takes a number of people to help you when visiting our offices and we would like to introduce you to some of the people whom you are likely to encounter.

Carol Stevenin Office Manager and Insurance Coordinator

Carol has been with the practice since 1980. She has been involved and instrumental at every turn of our practice's growth. She has served in many different capacities in her tenure, thereby allowing for a depth of understanding in nearly all areas of the practice. She is currently our insurance and/or third party expert and is in charge of our billing department. She would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding insurance coverage. Ann Corvese Surgical and Implant Coordinator

Ann joined the practice in 1980 as a certified dental assistant having completed her training at Roger Williams College. She rapidly developed an interest in dental implantology. She is currently the coordinator of our surgical cases and patient preparation involving major hospital surgery. She also is in charge of central sterilization. She can be reached at (401) 751-8029.
