Dr. Kahn will review the state boards' requirements for accurately and completely describing a soft tissue lesion of the oral cavity/oropharynx with emphasis on its correct morphological term. He will also describe the standard of care guideines established once a soft tissue lesion has been discovered with respect for deciding whether it is biopsied, referred for consultation, or only observed. Within the past decade, a variety of adjunctive diagnostic aids have been marketed to dentists, and Dr. Kahn will discuss their pros and cons as well as describe new types in development. Dr. Kahn will present a variety of common clinical cases in the context of building a differential diagnosis, working diagnosis and, once the diagnosis has been established, the proper treatment and management of the lesion. Also discussed will be the emerging role of the human papilloma virus in oropharyngeal carcinoma, and Dr. Kahn will dispel some oral cancer myths that have subsequently emerged. Lastly, an update on the theories and treatment guidelines of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) will be provided.
