Dentists are experts in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the teeth and periodontium; however, most have minimal training and comfort when it comes to "non-dental" oral diseases. Similarly, physicians receive little, if any, training in dental and oral medicine and are likely to refer their patients with oral diseases to oral health care specialists.

For these reasons, it is not at all uncommon for a patient to visit 5-10 doctors before receiving a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan, often months to years after the initial onset of signs/symptoms.

Dentists are responsible for providing comprehensive oral health care and, therefore, must be familiar with the wide range of pathological conditions that can affect the oral cavity. The objective of this course is to present a rational, concise, and comprehensive approach to the practice of oral medicine with an emphasis on diagnosis and management of some of the more common conditions encountered by dentists, while also highlighting those conditions that may require referral for specialty evaluation.

Nathaniel Treister, DMD, DMSc earned his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2000. He subsequently completed his Oral Medicine fellowship and Oral Biology training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2005. He is Board certified in Oral Medicine and practices at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with special interest in oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland diseases, and oral complications in cancer patients.

He is an Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he is the program director of postgraduate oral medicine. He has published extensively in the field of oral medicine and is the co-author of a clinical handbook entitled Clinical Oral Medicine and Pathology.
